Field note · Kenya

Amboseli

Amboseli is a compact, flat park in southern Kenya facing Mount Kilimanjaro, which rises across the border in Tanzania. Much of it is the dry bed of an ancient lake, a pale plain where dust devils spin at midday and heat haze makes the herds seem to float. Through it run swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's rain and snowmelt, which seep underground and surface here as springs, keeping the grass green in the driest months. The swamps draw the animals, above all the elephants. Families that researchers have followed since the early 1970s wade belly-deep through the marsh, and some old bulls carry tusks that sweep close to the ground. Hippos, buffalo and pelicans share the water, while lions, spotted hyenas and cheetahs work the open edges. Climb Observation Hill for a view over the whole basin, and meet the Maasai families whose cattle graze around the park. Kilimanjaro is shy at midday; the summit usually shows clearly at dawn and again in late afternoon. June to October and January to February are the dry months, when game crowds the swamps. Amboseli is four to five hours by road from Nairobi or a short flight from Wilson Airport, and it lies close to the Namanga border, so it pairs naturally with Tsavo West or a crossing into Tanzania.

Safari questions, answered

Planning an East Africa safari?

Straight answers from our Nairobi team — costs, timing, permits and what to pack.

How many days do I need for a Kenya safari?
Three to four days can work for one park such as Amboseli or the Maasai Mara. Allow roughly seven to ten days if you want several regions without changing accommodation every night. Nairobi day tours suit a city stay or a longer stopover; a Diani beach extension needs additional days. Your arrival and departure times determine how much wildlife time fits.
Which Kenya safari destinations can I combine?
Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru form a western circuit from Nairobi. Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East form a southeastern route that can continue to the Kenya coast. Samburu and Laikipia / Ol Pejeta suit a northern route. Combining distant circuits may need a longer trip or domestic flights.
What does the advertised safari price mean?
Most multi-day safaris display a starting USD rate per person per day and a trip total. Day tours marked “Request a quote” are priced for your date, party size and admission category. Season, room arrangement, traveller ages, residency and private or shared transport can change the final price. Ask for a written quote with the exact inclusions; international flights and optional activities are usually separate.
Can I book a Kenya safari for my family or honeymoon?
Yes. Family trips can use shorter game drives, suitable rooms and breaks between activities. Honeymoon routes can combine wildlife with Diani and a more private programme. Share children’s ages at travel, your preferred pace and any room or accessibility requirements in the custom safari planner so our team can check each activity.
When should I travel for the Maasai Mara migration?
The Kenya migration viewing period is commonly around July to October, but the herds follow rainfall and grazing rather than fixed dates. A river crossing is never guaranteed. The Mara also supports resident wildlife, so a safari can focus on big cats, elephant and other species outside the main migration period. We plan the route around your travel dates and current local conditions.
What can I do on a Nairobi day tour?
Choose a Nairobi National Park wildlife drive, a Giraffe Centre and pre-booked Sheldrick nursery visit, or a city heritage route with the Kenya National Archives and an optional introduction to matatu culture. Some programmes include the Karen Blixen Museum. Opening hours, nursery confirmation, road traffic and your pickup address determine the final schedule.
What should I pack for a Kenya safari?
Bring comfortable neutral-coloured clothes, layers for cooler mornings, sun protection, binoculars and a camera if desired. Soft bags may be required for domestic flights; check the confirmed airline allowance. Your route, season and activities determine any extra equipment, and our team sends a practical list with your itinerary.
How do I request a custom safari quote?
Use the safari planner to share your preferred destinations, dates, traveller ages, budget and travel style. Geob Ventures is based in Nairobi and has operated since 2013. Our team replies within one working day with advice and a proposed itinerary; your written quote confirms availability, arrangements and inclusions before booking.
